Fritz-Grasenick-Award goes to Robert Winkler

The Austrian Society for Electron Microscopy (ASEM) awards the Fritz-Grasenick-Award to young scientists in the field of electron microscopy since 2007. This year Dr. Robert Winkler was awarded at the 8th ASEM workshop 2018 at the Vienna Biocenter.

Robert studied Technical Physics at the Graz University of Technology and finished his PhD in February 2018. In the course of his PhD he focused on the direct fabrication of 3D-nanostructures via Focused Electron Beam Induced Deposition (FEBID). With his beautiful creations Robert won already numerous internal and external image competitions. To name only a couple of them: the EIPBN MicroGraph Contest in San Diego in the category „aSpiring“ where he fabricated a miniature model of the neo-Gothic cathedral „Herz-Jesu-Kirche“ in Graz and the FEBIP 2016 Image Competition in Vienna with a miniature model of the pyramides in front of the Louvre in Paris.

In 2017, Robert Winkler was awarded the Fritz-Grasenick-Award for his article “Direct-Write 3D-Nanoprinting of Plasmonic Structures”, published in ACS Applied Materials and Interfaces (2017). In short, this article is based on the 3D-nanoprinting technique that has been the topic of Robert’s PhD-thesis. This work describes how 3D-nanoprinting via FEBID was combined with core competences of the co-authors from the FELMI-ZFE: after the direct-write fabrication of the 3D-structures, those were purified by a post-deposition procedure, which was established at the ZFE in the work group of Harald Plank. STEM-EELS characterisation performed by Franz Schmidt revealed plasmonic activities of complex 3D-FEBID structures for the first time.
