Innovation by FELMI-ZFE

In the microscopic world every day is full of challenges; our team is dedicated to facilitate the researcher’s life. In the course of the years our technicians developed useful equipment: at the moment three items are for sale.

Universal Scanning Electron Microscopy (UPSEM)

BIOLOGICAL SAMPLES – LIQUID SAMPLES – WET SAMPLES

Have you ever analysed completely wet samples like the human hair below?

In Environmental Scanning Electron Microscopy (ESEM) electrically insulating samples, biological samples and even wet samples can be investigated without additional sample preparation. The imaging gas inside the sample chamber successfully suppresses charging of the sample, the vapour pressure prevents outgassing of the sample and allows investigating wet samples or doing wetting experiments. The disadvantage of this technique is the strong decrease in signal to noise ratio with increasing chamber pressure. Scientific publications in the last few years have shown that state of the art microscopes are working far away from physical limits and there is plenty of room for improvements. The secondary electron signal amplification as well as the differential pumping system are not designed in an ideal way for high-pressure applications.

At the Graz Centre for Electron Microscopy (ZFE) these two components were redesigned for the FEI Quanta Series from FEI (Thermo Scientific) to enable unique high pressure performance of the modified microscope. Lower acceleration voltages, smaller beam currents, shorter dwell times, wetting experiments at higher temperature and an expansion of the maximum chamber pressure up to one atmosphere are now available.

TEM Sample Transportation Box

SAFE – SIMPLE – SUITABLE

Every microscopist knows the situation: the sample has been perfectly prepared and needs to be transferred to the microscope, preferably without crushing or other damage.

This sample holder fits in every pocket, one must not be scared to damage the sample. It is stabilised without being compressed. The predefined holes match exactly the size of the grid – the sample cannot move sideways, there is no compression from the top, no adhesives are needed.

Material
Bottom part: aluminium
Top: plastics

Variations are possible: eg. Al/Al, Brass/plastics, Teflon/plastics. Contact us for modifications and special adjustments!

It is fairly easy to open the holder, no tools are needed! A simple 2 Cent coin is enough.

Micro Brass Vice

ADVANCED SAMPLE PREPARATION

This vice has been designed to facilitate the fixation of challenging samples with (two component) epoxy adhesive. The integrated cushioning reduces the breaking of brittle materials or uneven specimens. The Teflon prevents your samples from sticking to the jaws.
